Hand Transplants are real but currently have major risks associated to them. Many people find it hard to believe that a heart can be transplanted and often a hand can not, but a hand is actually far more difficult to graft then a heart. While a heart transplant procedure typically takes between 6 and 8 hours to complete, a Hand Transplant procedure typically takes between 8 and 12 hours to complete. First the donor and host bones must be attached, then the tendons, the arteries, the nerves and the veins.
In the future Canadian HERO hopes to make significant advancements in both the surgical procedures used to transplant a donor hand to a new host and more importantly the safety of the anti-rejection medication needed by the host. The current side effects of the anti-rejection medication can include rare forms of cancer within ten years of beginning treatment and because the anti-rejection medication weakens the bodies immune system, even minor infections can cause serious risk to the host.
