Silicone is quickly becoming the material of choice for the next generation of hand emulation. The above image is just one example of the realism that can be custom crafted into this type of prosthetic device. Although currently classified by many government agencies as strictly "cosmetic" devices, which is often not the case, Canadian HERO has been studying the many "functional" applications and advantages of silicone based prosthetic devices. By helping to protect skin grafts and sensitive areas on residual limbs from the damage that can be caused by sudden impacts and friction, silicone prosthetics can often be the most functional and important device that a person will use. From performing simple everyday tasks to competing in high level athletics, silicone prosthetic devices have proven to be extremely "functional" and important devices.
Canadian HERO and Bloorview Kids Rehab have completed working together on a very important . In this research initiative we examined the chemical properties, tensile strengths, elasticity, durability and feasibility of solid silicone hands for partial hand amputees.
